In May of 2011, the Henry
County Health Center, in conjunction with Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, was chosen as one of four counties to receive an
intern from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in a pilot program funded by the Missouri Hospital Association.
The health department was chosen to receive this intern because of the close working relationship shared between the
Health Center and Golden Valley Memorial Hospital. The intern, Jan Neumann, from the MU Masters in Public Health Program,
was tasked with creating a Community Health Assessment for Henry County. A Community Health Assessment
is basically a snapshot of the overall health of the citizens of Henry County and the environmental or sociological factors
that affect the health of our citizens. During the summer, Jan gathered data from a variety of sources
to include state tracked data, electronic surveys and personal interviews with local providers. This program
created an 88 page document with extensive information on her findings. The program culminated with a presentation
on August 24th to a combined meeting of the Henry County Health Center’s Board of Trustees and the Golden
Valley Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. Jan also presented her findings to the Henry County Health
Center’s Advisory Committee on October 18th. The Community Health Assessment will be used
by the Health Center in partnership with Golden Valley Memorial Hospital to address the chronic health issues in Henry County.
