Here is a list of items to keep
on hand in the case of a winter ice storm.
Food: (Minimum 3 day supply of
easily prepared meals, two week supply is preferred)
Easy to prepare foods like;
Peanut butter
Crackers
Canned goods (ravioli, soup, canned meats)
Chocolate (it increases your metabolism and makes you warmer)
Granola bars
Hot cocoa mix
Paper plates
Plastic forks
Aluminum foil (used to line the inside of pots when cooking and cuts down on
water usage to wash dishes)
Food preparation: (no one likes
to eat cold food if they can help it)
Coleman stove – multi fuel is preferable (multi fuel stoves will burn
coleman fuel or unleaded gasoline) Cost is approximately $30 for a single burner
stove. Use outside only due to hazardous fumes.
Sterno stove – inexpensive option, stoves can be purchased for around
$8 or made. The sterno is around $2 per can.
Not as efficient as a stove but will heat a can of soup.
Gas grill – open the cans, remove the labels and set on your gas grill.
Water: (Minimum of three gallons
per person)
You can purchase bottled water or just rinse out your old two liter pop bottles
and fill with water. Make sure you rinse them thoroughly and store in a cool
dry place. Rotate every six months. If
you have extra room in your deepfreeze store the water bottles inside to make it stay colder longer and the added benefit
of reducing your electric bill year round. Do not use milk jugs.
Heat:
Fireplace/wood stove – Make sure you have adequate wood stored on hand. Have your chimney inspected annually to ensure it is in good condition. Don’t forget fire starters.
Kerosene stove – Can be purchased from various sources for around $100
or less. Can give off a smell and you always need to crack a window when using. DO NOT LEAVE ON WHILE SLEEPING. A carbon
monoxide detector should be used. They do put off a lot of heat.
Catalytic heater – Small catalytic heaters are available that attach
to small green tanks of natural gas or with an adapter they can be attached to a larger tank such as what those used on outdoor
grills. They do not put off a large amount of heat but they are better than no
heat source. DO NOT LEAVE ON WHILE SLEEPING.
